NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

Police as well as a Connecticut professor and former FBI agent are putting together a profile,  trying to get inside the mind of Adam Lanza, who was the gunman in the Newtown school shooting.

Dr. Bill Tafoya, a retired FBI agent, has analyzed some major cases like the unabomber and the Oklahoma City bombings.

On Dec. 14, Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother while she slept in her bed before going to Sandy Hook Elementary School, where he killed 20 children and six adults. He then killed himself as police entered the school.

Tafoya, who is now a professor at University of New Haven, read over the five search warrants from the case that were released on Thursday.

"He had a long history of emotional problems stemming from a medical condition that wasn't well understood or known by the authorities," Tafoya said.

Even with pages of information, he said it's still hard to tell Lanza's motivation for going to the school.

"Whether he went there because of some adverse situation with a teacher or a principal, or whether it was simply going to go find some place where there are a lot of people I can shoot," Tafoya said.

Tafoya said something is clear in this case, like so many of the cases he has worked on.

"Something set him motion, something must have. There is always a trigger event," Tafoya said. "Always something that activates the person to act out."

He said it could have been a simple fight with his mother or someone else. Tafoya adds that it's something we may never find out.

While every case is different, Tafoya said he thinks there were some warning signs with Lanza.

"There were a lot of violent video games, lots of guns and lots of weapons. But, they weren't on display so many people could see them," Tafoya said. "Mom knew about them, but not many others."

And he advised the public to learn from this situation.

"When someone sees behavior that is inconsistent with the norm, then people need to take responsibility as citizens to say something about what they see to people in authority," Tafoya said. "Not just police, but teachers can investigate those matters."

The search warrants mention that Lanza played the video game Call of Duty.

Tafoya said he's surprised there weren't more video games listed because he says usually people who have a preoccupation with violence tend to have more of these types of games.

But not all the information has been released in this case.
