SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

The gloomy weather couldn't stop Good Friday commemorations in the Heartland.

A long line of Christians held crosses Friday morning along Highway-60 in and around Sikeston.

It's an event called "Carrying the Cross."

About 900-people in all are taking part.  The line stretches from Cairo, Illinois, to Houston, Missouri.

Good Friday is one of the holiest days on the Christian calendar. Christians mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the annual event.

Dozens of people joined to take part in the 13th Annual "Way of The Cross" march in Cape Girardeau on Friday.

Organized by the downtown council of churches, participants take turns carrying the cross on a more than one-mile journey in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The walk started at the courtyard gazebo of the Common Pleas Courthouse and included stops at the Discovery Playhouse and the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

"I think the message is Christians care about our city and our people," said Pastor Dan Brown, Evangelical United Church of Christ. "It's not just a matter of religion or it's something that happened thousands of years ago, It's our Savior is active and powerful and our prayers to Him can be active and powerful in helping the city and helping all of its people."

Participants say the walk was a powerful way to remember what this Easter season is all about.
