Survey shows adults text-while-driving more than teens

CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

A new survey finds teen drivers aren't the ones the most guilty of texting and driving.  It's actually adults.

Despite the risk, the problem of adults texting while driving is getting worse.

It happened quicker then Kevin Darnell could have predicted.

"I looked up, it was right there in front of me and there was nothing I could do," says Darnell, recalling a car accident he previously had."

Before he knew it, he'd hit the car in front of him.

"I slammed on the brakes tried to avoid it but it was too close," he says.

What could have distracted Darnell?

"This is what caused my accident," says Darnell, pointing to his phone.

Darnell is the owner of RTO Auto Sales and says business makes it hard for him to ignore his phone.

He says he gets a minimum of 50 texts and emails per day.

"I have to have it," says Darnell.

And while the warnings signs are there, a new survey says adults like him are the biggest texting-while-driving problem in the U.S.

Almost half of all adults admit to texting while driving in a survey done by AT&T.

That's compared to 43-percent of teens who admit to the act.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says each day, an average of more than 9 people are killed and more than 1,060 injured in crashes caused by distracted driving.

Darnell says the reason for his actions can be summed up in one word. "Stupidity," he says.

He knows there's a lesson to be learned in everything.

"Texting while driving can be costly and my even cost your life."
