Westfield woman dies in Springfield hit-and-run crash

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A 55-year-old Westfield woman is dead following a hit-and-run car crash in the city's North End on Saturday morning.

Shortly after the crash, police found and arrested the man they say was responsible for the accident, 25-year-old Mark Perez.

Officers discovered Perez at his home on Narraganset Street.

Sgt. John Delaney told CBS 3 that Perez attempted to flee the building with a large amount of marijuana.

Perez faces numerous drug and motor vehicle related charges and more charges could be filed in the coming days.

Two of Perez's roommates were also arrested on drug related charges.

The crash happened at the corner of Chestnut and Carew Streets shortly after 10 a.m.

Delaney said Perez's Jeep Cherokee crashed into a Pontiac Sunfire, which had a male driver and female passenger.

The woman died from her injuries at Baystate Medical Center.

Her identity is being withheld until her family has been notified.

Delaney thanked the witnesses for their assistance in tracking down the suspect.
