ALTO PASS, IL (KFVS) -

The faithful gathered before dawn for the annual Easter Sunrise Service at the base of Bald Knob Cross.

This year's event marked 77 consecutive Easter holidays celebrated at sun up atop Bald Knob Mountain.

The Bald Knob Cross of Peace will hit its own milestone in 2013. The 111-foot cross has now stood as a beacon of faith for 50 years. Construction on the cross was completed in 1963.

Over the decades the cross fell into disrepair. Weather and vandals ravaged the cross and the lighting around it.

In recent years, the cross has been completely restored through the help of donations.

The Bald Knob Cross of Peace Board of Directors now plans to make further improvements to the grounds around the cross. Organizers hope to install security cameras to deter vandals as well as a "Paver Garden" at the foot of the Cross.

Directors also hope to make improvements to the welcome center and amphitheater where sunrise services are held.
