New rare leopard goes on exhibit at KC Zoo

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The Kansas City Zoo has a new, rare and elusive resident.

The 10-year-old female Amur leopard will go onto exhibit for the first time in the zoo's African Congo area Thursday.

"She is a bit shy and timid with her new surroundings," Kansas City Zoo spokeswoman Julie Neemeyer said.

The zoo said there are only 38 out of 230 accredited zoos in the United States that exhibit these.

Amur leopards are from Asia and are one of the rarest felines in the world with only an estimated 45 individuals in the wild.

"The Kansas City Zoo is honored to become a part of its conservation efforts," the zoo said in a written statement.

Her new home has logs for climbing and scratching, a new sand area for digging and a hollowed log for resting.

The zoo said she is adapted to cooler climates with her thick fur that grows longer during the winter months.

Her rosettes are more widely spaced than those on other leopards.

She is also a carnivore with a tongue specially adapted with tiny hooks that are used to scrape meat off the bones of her prey.
