The scars from that time remain, but Baldwin says MLK's legacy lives on, saying we've come a long way but we're not quite there yet. The scars from that time remain, but Baldwin says MLK's legacy lives on, saying we've come a long way but we're not quite there yet.
Now at age 72, Baldwin hopes today's generation never forgets the fight, and above all the dream. Now at age 72, Baldwin hopes today's generation never forgets the fight, and above all the dream.

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

Thursday marks 45 years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior.

On April 4, 1968 the civil rights leader was gunned down in Memphis, TN.

It's a day individuals like David Baldwin will never forget.

"It was a sad time, was speechless...not understandable," said Baldwin. "This was supposed to be America."

At the time, Baldwin was back home from serving in the military.

He grew up in Cairo, Illinois and witnessed the race riots.

The death of Martin Luther King, Junior certainly added fuel to the fire.

"That brought about turmoil," said Baldwin.

Some of the moments were captured and documented in local author Preston Ewing Junior's book, "Let My People Go".

David Baldwin was president of a group called the United Front.

"It was a resistance against what was happening, a lot would have happened if we hadn't done it."

The scars from that time remain, but Baldwin says MLK's legacy lives on, saying we've come a long way but we're not quite there yet.

"It rears it's head every so often, it's still there."

Now at age 72, Baldwin hopes today's generation never forgets the fight, and above all the dream.
