Gamecock baseball team beats Tennessee

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE, TN (WIS) - Max Schrock's one-out RBI double in the top of the ninth inning helped lift 11th ranked South Carolina to a 5-4 win over Tennessee on Friday.

It was the first game of a three-game SEC baseball series at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.  The Gamecocks improve to 24-7 and 6-4 in the SEC with Tennessee now 13-15 and 3-7 in league play.

With the score deadlocked at 4-4, Schrock put Carolina ahead by a run as he launched a 1-0 pitch from UT reliever Zack Godley over the head of center fielder Pierce Bily for a double to give the Gamecocks the lead.

Tennessee tried to rally in the ninth as Jeff Moberg led off with a walk against Tyler Webb. But Webb retired the next three batters in order.

Webb earned the win in relief in 1.2 innings of work with just one run allowed, unearned on one hit with a walk and four strikeouts.  He is 1-1 on the year.

"Our guys responded the right way and still had energy in the dugout (after the eighth inning)," said South Carolina head coach Chad Holbrook.  "Max got a big hit for us and Tyler Webb was special once again."

South Carolina had seven hits and Tennessee had five.  Greiner went 2-for-3 and also walked twice.  Schrock went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch at 12:30 p.m.

Don't worry. We'll be a lot nicer to the players in the SEC than the Emmy voters were to Netflix. We kind of have to - it's highly unlikely an actor could power clean the equivalent of a human being.
