JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A Herrin man is dead and his fiancée is fighting for her life in a St. Louis hospital following a motorcycle wreck in Jackson County.

Jackson County deputies got the call of a motorcycle wreck just after 7 p.m. Saturday to an area near Makanda Road one mile east of Route 51 in Makanda.

Investigators say the motorcycle was traveling east on Makanda Road when it left the roadway, hit a guardrail and barreled down a steep embankment. Deputies say two people were thrown off a Harley Davidson motorcycle when the crash occurred.

The presumed driver of the motorcycle, 36-year-old James Greenwood of Herrin, was pronounced dead at Carbondale Memorial Hospital.

Greenwood's fiancée, 36-year-old Shelly Dwyer was airlifted from the hospital in Carbondale to a hospital in St. Louis for continued treatment of severe injuries.

There is no update available on her condition.
