CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Sunday is a day of remembering for the Jewish faithful around the world, and here in the Heartland.

It's a day has been set aside by the Jewish people to remember the ones who lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust.

More than six million Jews were killed in death camps in Germany during World War II.

It's a day of sorrow and sadness for some of the Jewish faith, and a day to celebrate Jewish heroism.

"There's also some things to celebrate, and that is certain moments of heroism," said Jonathan Wiesen of Carbondale. "Seventy-years-ago, almost to this day, there was an uprising in a ghetto of Warsaw, where the last remaining Jews decided not to go passively as the Nazis destroyed the ghetto, and, they were planning to take people away to their deaths.  They stood up and fought back and really pitched battle against the Nazis."

This day has been recognized by those of the Jewish faith since 1951.

It is observed around the world with poems, prayers, singing and the lighting of six candles to represent the six million Jews killed.
