Homeland Security exercise to test response plans

MARION, IL (KFVS) -

A group called "The Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System" is hosting a full scale Homeland Security exercise that aims to test local law enforcements response plans.

The drills test things like communication and multi-agency coordination in the event of a catastrophe like an earthquake.

After the 9/11 attacks, communication was found to be the largest weak spot in all of the agencies.

Organizers say the point of Tuesday's exercise was to ensure several different response groups could talk to each other during a disaster.

"The earthquake is going to knock it out so we are having to put up portable communications and we are bringing systems together that have never been brought together before so that everybody can talk together," said David Searby with Perry County EMC. "The proper communications is very critical in a situation like this so we do have the assets and resources here today that are allowing us to do that."

This is the first exercise of its kind in Illinois.
