BENTON, MO (KFVS) -

A Cape Girardeau man is accused taking money from an elderly Scott County couple.

Keith Lars Monia, 52, of Cape Girardeau was charged with two counts of financial exploitation of the elderly and two counts of forgery. His bond was set at $75,000.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter, detectives say Monia sold two annuity plans to an elderly Scott County couple between 2010 and 2012. Monia reportedly collected the couple's applications and accepted payments of $220,000 but never sent the applications or the money to the company.

Walter says an investigation revealed that the money was deposited in Monia's personal account, and an online trading account.

According to Walter, Monia previously had a license as an insurance producer,  but the Department of Insurance denied the renewal of his license in 2011 after receiving allegations of fraud.

Walter said his office was assisted during this investigation by the Mississippi and Scott County Elder Abuse Coalition and the Department of Social Services.

Walter pointed out that elder abuse cases can be extremely difficult to investigate and are often overlooked or not reported.

If you are a victim or know someone who is, please contact your local law enforcement agency or call the Elder Abuse Hot-line at 800-392-0210.
