Robbery suspect smelling of pepper spray taken into custody

Posted: Updated:

Police said the smell of pepper spray helped them identify the person who robbed a Madison nutrition store Wednesday afternoon.

An armed robber walked into a General Nutrition Centers store on Gallatin Pike around 4:30 p.m. with a pistol and aimed it at a female clerk.

The store employee handed over around $250 to $300 in cash to the man after he put a gun in her face and demanded money.

As the thief was leaving the store, the clerk then used pepper spray on the robber. An employee at a nearby mattress store saw the robber get into a white Toyota Prius.

Authorities spotted the car by helicopter, chased it and took the driver, Danny Wright, into custody.

Officer said Wright smelled like pepper spray and had the pistol with him inside the car. He faces aggravated robbery charges.
