Miles on Mathieu's drug tests: 'I don't really have the numbers there'

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Last week USA Today ran a story alleging that Tyrann Mathieu had failed more than 10 drug tests before he was suspended in college.

In the story an unnamed NFL assistant coach told USA Today when asked how many drug tests Mathieu had failed, the former LSU star said,  "I quit counting at 10. I really don't know."

LSU, and Mathieu both disputed the report."It is irresponsible and shows a lack of integrity for anyone to disclose medical information regardless of how it was gathered," Mathieu said.

Thursday morning head coach Les Miles was guest on NFL AM. He said he stands by LSU's drug testing  program, but he does not know how many drug tests Mathieu had failed.

"I don't really have the numbers there," Miles said. "I would be remiss to comment on number. I can tell you this: We have tested, re-tested, completely tested and tested twice in weeks at times. So just because there's a number reported, I don't know if that would be low or high, to be honest with you, and I can only tell you that it was based on our ability to treat and help. And so I don't really know exactly what Ty's specifics were, but I stand by our policy, and it really did help, in some way, identify a problem."

It should be noted that it has typically been Miles' policy not to comment on team personnel matters and this might very well have been the case with Thursday's interview.

Last week Director of Athletics Joe Alleva also expressed confidence in LSU's substance abuse program.

"LSU has a strong substance abuse program that tries to identify and assist in the treatment and long term recovery process of drug use and abuse, and it is a program we would put up against any in the country," Alleva said.  "Once a substance abuse problem is identified, LSU is diligent in tracking those individuals over extended periods of time with frequent testing and engages them in meaningful opportunities for support through counseling and substance abuse treatment."
