Tourist rescues hurt dog during trip to Mexico

MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

Most people come back from a trip to the beach with a tan and a camera full of nice pictures.

But a Wilson County woman recently returned from Mexico with a mission to save a dog that she met during her vacation.

Rhonda Robinson was in Playa del Carmen when she spotted the dog in need of help.

"We looked over, and didn't know if it was dead or alive. We passed it and then said, "Oh my God, we have to go back," said Robinson.

When she saw the dog was alive, she wrapped him in a towel and put him in her car.

It was tough for Robinson to find a veterinarian's office that was open because it was New Year's Eve. When she finally located a vet, she ran into a language barrier.

"She and I started to talk with our hands and draw pictures. I was distraught and didn't know what to do," said Robinson.

Two days later she was on a plane back to Nashville.

The shelter kept the dog and Robinson paid for the veterinarian bills and kept tabs on her new friend she named Rique.

When she got back to Tennessee, she started the complicated and expensive process of bringing the dog to the United States.

It took months of paperwork and phone calls but she was determined.  Even strangers pitched for her to finally adopt the dog.

When Rique finally arrived, Robinson gave him away to a friend who wanted to help.

One of the dog's front legs had to be removed when he arrived in the United States because of an injury that resulted in nerve damage.  Despite the amputation, Rique is doing well.
