HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

Throughout this weekend, different communities in Western Massachusetts have held races or walks in honor of the Boston Marathon, its participants and victims from last Monday's bombings.

Hundreds turned out downtown on Sunday afternoon for a 2.6-mile walk along part of the city's annual 10k road race route.

The event was organized by the Holyoke St. Patrick's Parade Committee, which urged everyone taking part to wear Boston memorabilia.

Jane Chevalier is the incoming president of the committee and said she wanted people in Boston to know that Western Mass was thinking of them.

"We needed to do something to show our support for Boston," said Chevalier. "We have family in Boston and have been there at that event. It just felt like you needed to do something."

With the committee also overseeing the annual road race, which attracts thousands to Holyoke every year, Chevalier told CBS 3 that the Boston bombings made the committee re-evaluate its own safety procedures.

"We have already started talking," said Chevalier.  "We are going to evaluate and ask for guidance from the people that are learning right now, how to better improve safety. Safety is always on our mind, but we are definitely going to be re-evaluating it."

Following Sunday's 2.6-mile walk, organizers planned on releasing hundreds of red, white and blue balloons into the air.
