Dorena-Hickman Ferry closed due to floodwaters

Posted: Updated:
DORENA, MO (KFVS) -

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry halted operations about 8:30 Monday, April 22 when floodwaters reached the top of the Kentucky landing at Hickman.

After spending much of last year fighting to maintain operations due to low water on the Mississippi River, Captain Ed Floyd says it is ironic that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry had to shut down this morning due to high water.

The ferry normally is forced to halt operations when the Cairo gauge reaches about 44 feet.  Cairo reported the river at 44.5 feet at the 8:00 a.m. reading today with a forecast to go to 48.5 feet by Friday.

Unless the forecast is revised downward, Floyd says the elevated river levels will keep the Dorena-Hickman Ferry closed all week.

Any additional rain across the Midwest could continue the upward trend and extend the closure.

Captain Floyd will be watching for the gauge to drop below 44 feet so service can resume.

Meanwhile, the ferry crew will stay busy with maintenance until the river allows them to get back into business.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry connects KY 1354 at Hickman, Kentucky, with Missouri Route A and Route 77 near Dorena, Missouri.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry Operates from the Hickman Landing with regular river crossings during daylight hours.

Passage for passenger vehicles is $14 with additional tolls for trucks, motor homes, and vehicles pulling trailers.

There are discounts for vehicles making return crossings.
