MOUNDS, IL (KFVS) -

Sixth grade middle school students at Meridian Middle School took learning to a whole new level. They built the Taj Mahal hundreds of milk cartons.

Students collected 865 milk cartons over the past couple months and joined together to start building. The students broke up into groups and planned out how to build each section.

After constructing each section, they put it all together and created the masterpiece.

Sumer Oglesby, Meridian Social Studies teacher, wanted to teach the children outside of the textbook.

Oglesby heard about the nationwide "Made By Milk Contest" and her sixth grade classes submitted their entry.

If they can get the most online votes, their school can win $2,500.

Oglesby thought this project would be a creative way to teach her students how to bond together and make something they would be proud of.

The kids picked the Taj Mahal because they were fascinated by the architecture and they were learning about landmarks in their class.

If they win, they plan on using the money to buy green cleaning supplies for the classrooms so they can help some of the kids with allergy problems.

Oglesby feels this is the first of many projects that will heighten the students' learning desire as well as raise community awareness.

If you would like to vote, go to www.madebymilkcontest.com. Voting starts Monday and ends on May 10. The winner will be announced on May 22.
