NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Police are investigating after a man was stabbed Monday afternoon near an East Nashville bus stop.

The victim had just received food from nearby East Nashville Cooperative Ministry and walked across Main Street to catch a bus when he was stabbed about 2 p.m.

The victim, who suffered wounds to the chest, went back to the ministry and told staff he'd been stabbed.

Police said the suspect, identified as Ricky Merryman, 49, was later found at a nearby liquor store and claimed, "I didn't do anything wrong."

Merryman was arrested and charged with attempted criminal homicide.

The victim was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where his condition has not been released.

East Nashville Cooperative Ministry Executive Director Alan Murdock released the following statement:

"Our team at East Nashville Cooperative Ministry is deeply saddened by yesterday's incident in which a client was stabbed at a bus stop across the street from the organization, shortly after receiving our food relief services. Our mission is to provide critical food relief to our community, and to provide a safe place for our neighbors to serve and be served. We will continue to strive to create a secure environment for people to access support, work and volunteer."
