Springfield officers head to Cambridge to support fallen MIT officer

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Around 100 Springfield officers made the trip to Cambridge on Wednesday to show their support for fallen MIT officer Sean Collier.

"When one officer goes down we all bleed, and I think that's going to be evident today at MIT," said Springfield Police Commissioner William Fitchet. "I told the officers that this funeral occasion is very important, that it's not just the commonwealth of Massachusetts, it's not just the United States of America. It's the entire world that is going to be watching, and it's very important."

Two busloads of Springfield officers shipped out to the eastern part of the state around 7 a.m. Wednesday. Many said that being at MIT is especially important since Boston officers made the trip to Springfield last year when officer Kevin Ambrose was killed.

"These officers from Boston came up when Kevin was killed in the line of duty. We'd like to show the same respect they showed Kevin," said Kevin Burnham, the vice president of the patrolman's union for the Springfield Police Department.

"The message is that we all hang together. Hang together and hang tight, and when you hurt one of us you hurt us all," said Fitchet.

And as Collier's family mourns his loss, members of the Springfield Police Department want them to know that their support will not end after the service.

"I think it's very important for the families to know that their loss is our loss and that we are going to support them not just today but for the rest of their lives. They're going to be supported. They are survivors," said Fitchet.

The Salvation Army came out to Springfield Police Department's Headquarters to provide food and drinks for the officers before they left for Cambridge. The organization has been pitching in to help since the bombings first occurred.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
