CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -

The City of Cairo started its third phase of cleaning up the city by demolishing 62 buildings.

Mostly homes are on the list, but also a couple of historic buildings.

The mayor says the history will not be forgotten but it is time to look forward in creating a new history for the town.

The Cairo Public Utility Company is administering the Cairo Revitalization Project.

The completion date is June 30.

The city is working on a website about their city that incorporates the businesses, history, etc.

Some contractors are recycling the bricks. There are five contractors working on the project.

An old flower shop, the O'Shea Building, the old Chamber of Commerce, an old jewelry store, and a former gift shop is being torn down in the downtown area.
