CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

A former SIU student convicted of robbery has been sentenced to serve time behind bars.

Dionta Bratcher, 19, of Park Forest, Illinois, was sentenced in Jackson County court on Wednesday on three separate cases, according to Michael C. Carr, Jackson County State's Attorney.

Bratcher was sentenced to seven years for robbery, five years for aggravated battery and 364 days for battery.

"You have come to this community and cut a wide, wide swath," said Judge William G. Schwartz. "You have impacted the entire university community and the reputation of the university."

The first two sentences will run concurrent in the Illinois Department of Corrections. It was recommended to the court that Bratcher be considered for 'boot camp' alternative.

That is where first and second time offenders  who are under 36 years old are offered a 120 day sentence with extra time tacked on for misbehavior.

According to Carr, Bratcher was enrolled as a student at SIU Carbondale at the time of the offense and was convicted for aiding two others in the strong-arm robbery of another SIUC student. The robbery happened in the parking lot of the Newman Center, adjacent to the SIU Recreation Center on Sept. 29, 2012.

The evidence at trial in February established that the victim was walking alone when he was punched and knocked to the ground. The victim managed to get up and run away with Bratcher and another individual giving chase. After being tripped by a third person, the victim was punched and his wallet was stolen by Deangelo Brown. Carr says Brown previously pleaded guilty to robbery and was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

This case was investigated by the Southern Illinois University Police Department. Assistant State's Attorney Mark A. Hamrock was responsible for the prosecution of this case.
