Staying healthy and safe after flooding

Posted: Updated:

Rivers and creeks are creeping out of their banks and into our lives in the Heartland and all over the Midwest, and that water can be dangerous.

So, the Illinois Department Of Health issued a few guidelines to help keep you and your family safe - no matter where you live.

Health directors say it's important to stay out of flood water, and especially make sure it doesn't come into contact with cuts or sores.

It's also very important to keep your children out of the water.

The department warns not to eat or drink anything that has been in floodwater, and wash any items that come in contact with the water.

Health officials say a lot of floodwater has raw sewage in it, so it's important to wash your hands or any other part of your body that comes in contact with the water.
