2 buses crash in Mt. Vernon

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

The Mount Vernon Police Department is investigating a crash between two buses.

Police say two school buses crashed at 18th and Casey around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say initial reports indicate the buses were in the process of leaving from Casey Junior High when the driver of one bus became distracted and did not see the bus in front of him stop.

One bus rear-ended another bus. The first bus left the scene and began delivering children to their homes.

Seven children were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says the children have been released. Several children were picked up by parents on the scene. Other children were checked out at the school.

The driver of the school bus was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
