Former UAH hockey player charged with rape flees to Finland

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A UAH hockey player arrested on rape charges fled the United States to his native Finland with no intention of returning according to the assistant district attorney handling the case.

Lasse Uusivirta was arrested on April 1 for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old female student in his dorm on John Wright Drive on the UAH campus.

The student reported the incident on January 13.

Uusivirta was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 1st.

Attorneys for Uusivirta released a statement saying, "Lasse has not fled this jurisdiction to avoid prosecution. Lasse has not been convicted of any criminal offenses, and there are no travel restrictions placed on him."

Uusivirta will face rape charges if he returns to the United States.

According to school officials, Uusivirta is no longer a student at UAH.
