HEADLAND, AL (WSFA) -

The city of Headland is far from the beaches of Alabama's coast where an oil spill covered beaches during the BP oil spill, but the city is seeking more than a million dollars in damages.

On average, Headland sees 16,000 vehicles a day traveling along Highway 431 through Henry County. But leaders say they saw that number significantly drop with the BP oil spill. They believe the spill is the reason for the decline and they want the oil giant to pay them for the economic damage.

Headland is asking for $1.6 million. The city filed a claim for damages to BP through the Montgomery-based law firm of Beasley Allen.

City leaders say the Deepwater Horizon oil spill reduced the flow of traffic and tourism in the area. They say businesses were greatly affected.

Among the businesses affected, the owners of J&L Marathon say during the last two years business is down about 50 percent.

Owners Heather Smith says things are looking up at this point and business is starting to get back to normal.

Headland Mayor Ray Marler says there is no word on when the city will find out if its claim is approved. There are no guarantees it will even get that amount of money, but leaders say every bit helps.
