NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

People are beginning to pay their respects to legendary country music artist George Jones. Family and friends said their goodbyes Wednesday at a private visitation, and a public memorial is set for Thursday.

At least 500 people were expected at Jones' visitation at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Nashville, including Gov. Bill Haslam, and a who's who of country artists such as George Strait and Barbara Mandrell.

Country singer Joe Diffie said Jones had a unique gift.

"He was the quintessential country singer, and the cool thing about him was he didn't manufacture any of that. It was just so natural for him. A producer in Nashville said you could get 10 people to sing the same song, and the one you would remember is the one George Jones sang," Diffie said.

Channel 4 will have complete live coverage of the Grand Ole Opry House memorial for George Jones beginning Thursday at 10 a.m.
