MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's been an exciting day, a day long in the works, for dog lovers around Alabama's capital city. Four-legged friends now have a place to play without the constraints of a leash.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, officials with the Montgomery Humane Society and others gathered for the grand opening of Montgomery's new Bark Park.

The complexy, officially named the Hannah Daye Ridling Bark Park, is located at Blount Cultural Park.

The Montgomery Humane Society asked for $100,000 in donations to make the park a reality. The community gave more than $200,000 in response.

The facility, where dogs will be free to run and play without a leash, has a fenced space for small dogs that can keep them safe and away from larger dogs.

The City Parks and Recreation constructed the park and will maintain going forward.

NEW BIKE AND WALKING TRAIL

The city is also getting news biking and walking trails. Mayor Strange held a news conference Thursday morning where he unveiled photos of the new 5-mile trail.

Officials hope the new trail encourages residents to come and enjoy nature while staying healthy.

Those looking to have a hand in the building of the new trails can come to Lagoon Park on Saturday, May 4 for a public work day.
