EUFAULA, AL (WSFA) -

A Barbour County woman is under arrest, charged with torturing her two children.

Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw confirmed the charges against 29-year-old Bethany Paige Sumner of Eufaula. The sheriff says Sumner is alleged to have beaten her children on April 01, 2013.

Upon being arrested, the mother was charged with two counts of Torture, willful abuse of a child under the age of 18 by a responsible person.

Sheriff Upshaw said an investigation started into Sumner's actions after an 8-year-old boy went to school with bruising, whelps and cut places on his skin. The school contacted DHR which then contacted the Barbour County Sheriff's Office.

DHR did a safety plan on the child and discovered that another son in the home, age 11, had the same type injuries to his body.

Lt. David Morris, who investigated the case, said an investigation shows that the children had been beaten with a piece of wood because they had broken a light bulb.

Authorities say a second person, whom they have not identified by name, is being sought in connection to the case. They say that person helped Sumners beat the children by holding them down.

The children were removed from the home and placed in foster care.

Sumners is being held on a $20,000 bond.
