Terminally ill child has wish come true

BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

Surgery along with chemotherapy is a lot for most adults to handle. But imagine if you're 8-years-old.

That's the situation facing a Benton, Illinois family. But, a very special brotherhood came together to help him out.

Eli Gifford and Sergeant Jonathan Edwards first crossed paths back in December.

"He just changed our world," says Edwards with the Illinois State Police.

That's when Eli got to shop with a cop.

"I think we went into it thinking we were going to do something for a kid, something nice for a kid, and we probably got more out of it then he did," he says.

Edwards and other local law enforcement wanted to do more for this amazing kid going through so much, so he could forget about being sick and just be a kid.

Eli got to experience everything from helicopters touching down, to target practice.

He even experienced a mock hostage search and rescue that was a successful mission.

Eli became a hero for a day. But to anyone who knows him, a lifetime.

"Our pictures will show the smiles but everyone that was here sees just how special it really was to him," says his mom Jennifer Gifford.

It is something he and his family will cherish forever.

"We knew that there were going to be a few things, but I didn't quite expect as much that was," said Gifford. "The warm hearts is what really means the most."

But it's his smile that says it all.

Eli received a special note from Rachel Ray, one of his favorite chefs.

A fund has been set up in Eli's name at the State Bank of Wittington.
