HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

Students in Illinois could soon be learning a lot more in their sex education classes than some parents and school leaders want them to.

The Comprehensive Sex Education bill as it's being labeled by Illinois Lawmakers in Springfield, has some very definitive language in it.

HB 2675 could change the material in your child's sex education classes, the changes would be more graphic material.

Herrin High School Principal Dr. Terry Ryker has some concerns over the possible changes.

"I think when there's different mandates out there telling you, you have to do it. It takes control away from the local school districts," said Dr. Ryker.

Sex Education is part of the Health Classes taught to Freshman at Herrin High School.

"We don't get too graphic with it," said Dr. Ryker. "But we give the information the students need to know. Most of the things they need to know probably really ought to be taught at home. But we realize sometimes it isn't. And we give the students the information that need to make healthy choices in their life."

But, some parents I talked to about the proposed changes to their child's sex education class we're not happy. Some others did not object.

"I understand that maybe they need that to educate kids," said Susan Foskey of Herrin. "But if it's more graphic, no! I don't think they need to go into more detail. And push something more on these children then they are really able to handle at this age."

"Probably no more graphic then what they see in movies. They see some really graphic stuff in movies nowadays," said Angie Lazorchak of Herrin. "So, no I wouldn't object to any changes in the class material."

If the bill does pass and become law Dr. Ryker is hopeful that the Illinois Education Association won't take complete control over the material used in Sex Education Classes.

"Sometimes when you have different organizations being represented like Planned Parenthood, and with the ACLU it may be a little too graphic for students," said Dr. Ryker. "But we'd have to look at the material. And hopefully the state would allow us to have a leniency to adapt it to what our students need."
