Free dental clinic preliminary numbers released

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The free dental clinic at the Show-Me Center reached capacity on Friday and for Saturday.

The Missouri Mission of Mercy is providing the clinic.

Below are the preliminary numbers from this weekend's MOMOM:

  • Nearly 1,775 patients served
  • Nearly $962,000 in care provided
  • Nearly 630 cleanings
  • Nearly 1,165 fillings
  • Nearly 2,600 extractions (teeth pulled)

Around 1000 people were in the building late Saturday morning to receive dental work. The doors had been closed. A spokesperson said it would take until 5 p.m. to take care of the people.

A spokesperson says many patients who are there have been in pain for years with little to no relief. Because of MOMOM, many of them are pain free for the first time in a long time.

Missouri's state budget contains no funding for adult dental services, according to Mission of Mercy. Because of this, many adults forgo preventive dental care, which often leads to a need for more costly emergency treatment.

A spokesperson says based on the rate of exit, they expected it to take until 5 p.m. Friday to provide care for the patients already in the building.

MOMOM estimated they will have seen about 900 patients by the end of the day Friday.

More than 300 people braved the cold temperatures and wet weather overnight to get in line to see the dentist.

Bet you don't hear that very often.

More than 200 dental professionals from across the state provided cleanings, fillings, root canals, and pulled lots of teeth for those without insurance.

About 2,000 patients are expected during the two-day event. People from as far away as Houston, Ironton, and Cardwell, Missouri traveled to clinic.

The Missouri Dental Association says the large turnout at events like this just shows the need for dental service in the Heartland.

"There's such a tremendous need," said Paul Roberts of the Missouri Dental Association. "The patients are very grateful. We had our first line up outside at 9 o'clock in the morning on Thursday."

Organizers ask those attending the event to have patience.

The purpose of the event is to relieve people of any pain they have. The clinic is offering cleanings, extractions, and fillings.

Around $1 million in free care will be provided.

The event runs until 5 p.m. Friday before reopening Saturday at 5 a.m. - 5 p.m. or until capacity.
