Experience, technology help town keep an eye on flooding

Posted: Updated:
METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) -

Rain in the forecast is heightening flood concerns along the Mississippi River, but folks along the Ohio River are keeping an eye on the rising water as well.

In Metropolis, emergency management officials say the flood of 2011 was destructive, but also instructive. EMA workers say they learned a lot about where the water goes when the river comes up. That knowledge coupled with technology has given the city the ability to map the river's effect on metropolis - block by block and house by house.

"We know what stages to look for and we know how fast the water comes and we know the little areas it infiltrates," said Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel.

The Ohio River still has several feet to rise before it causes trouble in Superman's hometown, but if rain in the forecast brings flooding the mayor says Metropolis is ready.
