Leadership group proposes ice skating rink, boardwalk for Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

They have big ideas and even bigger plans to make their dreams come true.

Members of Leadership Cape have revealed some of their proposals to improve Cape Girardeau.

One group would like to build a multi-purpose facility that could be used for a variety of family events.

They also want to bring in an ice skating rink as part of that deal.

It would be built on the Osage Center campus on North Kingshighway.

"One of the team members came up with the idea for an outdoor ice skating rink," said Kim Voelker, with the Chamber of Commerce. "She had visited the one in St. Louis on several occasions and realized that we didn't have any type of activity in this area, and thought it would be a great idea to look into."

If the outdoor ice skating rink becomes a reality, it might also feature a fire pit that skaters could use to warm up at and grab a hot chocolate.

Under the team's proposal, during the summer, the ice skating rink area would be a sand volleyball pit instead.

Another idea presented on Friday is a boardwalk.

Another team from Leadership Cape came up with a plan to build a boardwalk on the riverside of the floodwall.

It would begin at Broadway and go all the way down to the casino.

Its important to note these are just ideas at this point.

But, members of Leadership Cape have dreamed up some big ideas in the past that have become reality.

Those ideas include Discovery Playhouse and the founding of Old Town Cape.
