Springfield Police Department K-9 unit announces new K-9

Posted: Updated:

The Springfield Police Department's K-9 Unit hosted a press conference Monday morning at White Street School where Springfield Officer Tommy Horne attended.

Horne's K-9 partner Marco has grown old and is being retired after eight years of loyal service to the city of Springfield.

In searching for a replacement partner for Horne, the Springfield Police Department turned to Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation in Bloomfield, CT where Horne chose a new K-9 partner.

The fourth-grade class at the White Street school had an essay contest to name the new K-9 at the request of the K-9 Unit. The entire fourth grade submitted essays to come up with a new name.

During Monday's press conference, the K-9 Unit announced the winner of the contest.  The unit also announced Horne's new K-9 partner will be named Hunter.

The student who named the K-9 was then presented with a plaque.

An additional award was also given for participating in the contest and was presented to the principle and entire fourth grade.

There will be an update of Horne's K-9 partner's name at the end of the press conference.
