MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A woman who is supposed to set an example of leadership for Girl Scouts is accused of quite the opposite.

Police are investigating allegations that the woman responsible for overseeing one of four service units in Rutherford County as stolen more than $30,000 from a Girl Scouts account, allegedly using the money for personal needs.

"Quite candidly, we always looked to them as role models. For someone to be a role model for young children growing up, it's sets a horrible example," said Don Marchant, grandfather to Girl Scouts.

The woman volunteers as a Service Unit Manager and may have had about 30 children under her supervision.

The volunteer allegedly wrote checks with the Scouts' money to buy personal items, transferred money and made several withdraws over the last couple of years from the account, according to Catherine Fowlkes, an employee with the Girl Scouts.

Marchant's three granddaughters are members of the Girl Scouts troop. He said he couldn't believe money was apparently being stolen from children.

"They are out there in the rain, the heat trying to sell cookies. For someone to sell from them again is tragic," Marchant said.

In a statement, officials with the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee said:

"It saddens us to hear of these allegations against one of our own. However, Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee's main focus is building girls of courage, confidence and character, and we assure you that we are cooperating with law enforcement and taking the proper steps to make certain that our girls continue receiving the full Girl Scout Experience."

The case remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
