COLP, IL (KFVS) -

A Colp man says he's lucky to be alive after an intruder attacked him in his own home.

Joecephus Mitts Jr. says it was just past 2 a.m. Tuesday when he heard noises in the back room of his home.

"I got up out of bed and got my pistol," said Mitts.

But, as he made his way with his walker to the back room he didn't see anyone in his home.

"As I made my way back into my bedroom he grabbed me from behind. He wrestled the firearm from my hands and knocked me down."

Mitts says the intruder then began wrapping duct tape around his arms and ankles.

"I thought he was going to kill me," Mitts said. "Whoever it was he hit me right here in the head, knocked out one of my teeth and put the pistol I had in my mouth."

Mitts says the man then began ransacking his home looking for things. And took several firearms he had in the home.

"It's a damn shame that they do that old folks. That's the reason I moved out of Chicago. I'm a retired school bus driver. I drove a school bus for 58 years," said Mitts.

He says it took him more than eight hours to get free from the duct tape. Mitts says he then walked across the street to his neighbor and asked him to call police.

"That's hurts me. I've lived in this community all of my life," said Darren Perkins. "And for somebody to do this to an elderly person in my community, that really hurts."

Mitts, 70, was injured by the intruder. And was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.
