Wounded veteran's home damaged in car collision

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A wounded Vietnam War veteran said he was trapped inside after a car came careening through his Murfreesboro home.

He said he was afraid the whole ordeal would leave him with nowhere to live.

"It used to be nice in here - and clean," Mark Arnold said.

The garage building where Arnold lives came crashing down around him a couple of weeks ago when his former girlfriend accidentally rammed her car through the front.

"I was sitting here. I heard the car rev up," he said. "The next thing you know, I was in the wall."

Arnold is accustomed to hard times. He lost part of his leg serving in Vietnam.

"It broke my wheelchair, and it hurt my shoulder real bad, because it bumped me up there," Arnold said.

Arnold has been living in the empty garage on a farm in Murfreesboro thanks to the generosity of the property owner.

Now, he is facing the fear that he will soon be homeless if the insurance company wants him to move out while repairs are being made.

He said no apartment or hotel is likely to rent to someone with a large dog.

"I don't want to go anywhere else," Arnold said. "I can't just pick up and leave and go anywhere. I really don't want to. I don't know where I'd go."

Farmers Insurance Company insures the woman who crashed into the building.

A company official said the company plans to write Arnold a check for his destroyed property and is willing to pay for him to stay in a hotel while repairs are being made. Or, he can stay on the property if he wants to and the owner agrees.

The insurance company said it has already sent a check to the property owner to fix the building.

New federal regulations have changed what many kids who attend public schools eat for lunch at school. However, some area private schools don't have to follow those rules and have come up with their own new school lunch program.
