Suspect in Franklin County quadruple homicides back in court

OTTAWA COUNTY, KS (KCTV/AP) -

The man charged with killing four people on an eastern Kansas farm was back in court Monday afternoon.

Kyle Flack, 27, is being held on $10 million bond, which was set during Friday's initial court appearance.

He is charged with capital murder and first-degree murder in the deaths of 18-month-old Lana Leigh Bailey, her mother, 21-year-old Kaylie Bailey, and 30-year-old Andrew Stout.

He also is charged first-degree murder in the death of 31-year-old Steven Eugene White.

The prosecutor is considering seeking the death penalty. A judge Monday afternoon set Flack's next court appearance as 1:15 p.m. Monday, July 8.

Flack swiveled in his chair in the court room and showed no emotion on his face. Family members of the victims were present for Monday's brief hearing.

Family members told KCTV5 that they wanted to see Flack and whether he showed any signs of remorse.

Marty Graham, a friend of Stout's, said the hearing helped penetrate the numbness.

"I think I needed to know this case was really real," Graham said.

Andrew Helm worked on the back of a trash truck with Flack for more than a year. He said he hosted a BBQ on April 26 and "they were all over."

"Kyle seemed normal. Andrew seemed normal. Kaylie seemed normal," he said. "There was no tension."

However, he said there was tension between Flack and White.

On Monday, Helm shared with KCTV5 texts between him and Flack on May 3, which is after the BBQ. Prosecutors believe the four were likely dead by then.

Bailey was last seen on May 1 when she was driving to Stout's farm. Stout had agreed to watch Lana-Leigh while Bailey worked. Bailey's family reported her missing to Olathe police on May 3.

Helm texted Flack about 6:30 p.m. May 3 that Stout's family was worried about him being missing. Flack assured Helm that there was nothing to worry about.

"I talked to him yesterday. He finally got everybody out of his house. He's probably just laying low. Can't blame him!" Flack texted Helm.

Helm texted Flack back about growing fears by Stout's brother who had been unable to reach Stout for several days.

"He said he planned to get away for a minute with his girl. You know Andrew," Flack wrote back.

Helm has provided the texts to law enforcement.

Flack was picked up for questioning early Wednesday in Emporia, where officers found the car that Bailey had been driving when she was last seen.

A body that was believed to be the toddler's was found over the weekend, and authorities are working to positively identify it. The adults' bodies were found earlier in the week.

Authorities have not provided a motive for the quadruple homicides. White's mother has said she fears it was drug related.

Carla Fisher said Monday that she has so many questions including "Why? Why? It's all I want to know."

Prosecutors have said White was killed first and Bailey, her daughter and Stout may not have been killed for several days after White was slain. Prosecutors have said their deaths were premeditated and that Bailey was raped.
