Nashville musicians feel conned by studio

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

They come to Nashville each year by the hundreds, many with nothing more than a guitar and a pick in their pocket, but several aspiring musicians are seeing their Music City dreams crushed by con artists.

Greg Mitchell came to Nashville from Fayetteville, TN, and was attracted to a promise of studio work at a business called Nashville Demo Studio.

"I said, 'This is too good to pass up' - playing with a full band, a slide guitar," Mitchell said.

But that's where the dream turned into a nightmare.

"Everyone's heard the stories: 'Somebody stole my song and did me wrong,'" Mitchell said.

The Nashville Demo Studio allegedly took off with his money and his lyrics, and he's apparently not alone.

"It's kind of embarrassing. There's always been scams in the music industry, and I think we found one of them," Mitchell said.

Kathleen Calligan, with the Better Business Bureau of Nashville, said the organization is hoping to press criminal charges against the studio - at the very least wire fraud, because much of the money was wired to the business.

"They're nothing but con artists. They take their money very quickly and destroy their dreams," Calligan said.

Channel 4 News attempted to contact the people at Nashville Demo Studio for comment, but both numbers had been disconnected.
