NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Boy Scouts of America has approved a resolution that will allow any child who otherwise qualifies for a Boy Scout program to be allowed to join regardless of sexual orientation.

The decision comes during a vote at a national convention taking place this week in Texas.

While gay youth members will be allowed, the policy will keep a ban in place against openly gay adult staff and volunteers.

Rallies in about 40 U.S. cities, including Nashville, protested the proposed policy change last week.

Roughly 70 percent of the troops in Tennessee are currently sponsored by a church or religious organization, and many have previously said they were considering disbanding if the membership rules were to change.

Kim Brisson, with the Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts, said the local organization is now just moving forward.

"First of all, we're grateful to all of the parents, volunteers and supporters who have called with reactions and comments about the policy change. Really, we're excited about moving forward. We're still going to serve the youth of Middle Tennessee. We have 27,000 youth that we serve throughout the Middle Tennessee Council," Brisson said.

All seven Boy Scouts delegates from Middle Tennessee previously said publicly that they planned to vote against the resolution.
