CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Saturday is Armed Forces Day and the 5KFVS in Cape Girardeau featured a special tribute to our troops.

Sgt. Roman Smith, a member of the National Guard, ran the race carrying his bag full of training gear on his back.

He partly did it as a training exercise, but also to remind everyone of the sacrifices he and his fellow soldiers make every single day.

"Everyone gets to see just a small glimpse of what we do," said Sgt. Smith. "And, I try to put a good name out, as often as we can.  Because a lot of people just see what they see on the news and it's different when you see them in person for yourself."

The 5KFVS also made a tribute to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.  A few of the local people who were in Boston for the marathon also ran 5K Saturday morning.
