JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

A Jackson mother's effort to change the way young offenders are treated if they're convicted as adults heads to Gov. Jay Nixon's desk.

Jonathan's Law, named after Jonathan McClard, requires judges to consider giving minors a juvenile sentence even if they're convicted as adults and give an explanation why if they do not.

Tracy McClard's son took his own life in an adult facility at 17 as he began a 30 year prison sentence.

McClard says lawmakers' support in both the House and Senate sends a strong message.

"Cool thing is and you can tell because of the unanimous vote in the Senate and House that the pendulum is swinging in the other direction," McClard said. "People do not want kids in adult facilities because they know what happens to them... They're beaten, they're raped, and they die."

The sponsors of Jonathan's Law say Nixon confirms he will sign it into law.
