MARSTON, MO (KFVS) -

A stop on a road trip turned one traveler's trip into a nightmare that lasted more than a month.

It happened in Marston, when Debbie Vallejo let her dog, Slick, go to the bathroom at Pilot's. Vallejo says she took her eye off him for two seconds and when she turned back around, Slick was gone.

"I look that way, that way, that way and that way for 20 miles," Vallejo said. "I couldn't find that dog anywhere."

J. L. Bugg saw Vallejo looking for her dog and told her if she found it, he would call her.

Four weeks later he did just that. He found Slick in the same area he went missing.

He called Vallejo and she drove 8 hours from Rockford, Illinois to pick him back up.

"I'm so happy to have my companion back," Vallejo said.

Slick is also a service dog. He is trained to help Vallejo balance.

"I have artificial bones and he helps me a lot," Vallejo said.

Bugg says he couldn't be happier the two are back together.

"I know that feeling," Bugg said. "I'm glad she has her dog back."
