CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Mark Hasheider, the Emergency Management Coordinator with the Cape Girardeau Fire Department said disasters like Oklahoma make them double check they’re on track with their plan.

"We were watching the live video, you know our firefighters are talking about the what ifs, what we could do, where our problems are at," said Hasheider.

You’ve probably driven by it before, Cape Girardeau Fire Station Number 3. But did you know if there was a disaster in Cape, it would be the emergency headquarters?

"As you look around the room we would have a place for the police, fire, and public works,” said Hasheider.

The Emergency Operations Center has spots for the Mayor and City Manager, planning and damage assessment, a larger kitchen to serve the people stationed there, a communications truck with satellite, and a sturdy building.

"Upstairs what you see outside is just facial brick, brick that could be taken away and has no structural integrity, within the building itself, behind this we have block walls, underneath, protecting our emergency operations center all the walls as well as the ceiling, the floor for station number 3 would be poured concrete, so it would be very hard, very unlikely that we would see the damages of a complete catastrophic collapse," said Hasheider.

But if that did happen, there’s a plan for that too. The emergency team would headquarter at fire station number 1, the police station, or the Osage Center.

"We also think about the possibility what if the building's not here," said Jamie Koehler.

Koehler with the Red Cross said it’s something they have to think about too.

She said they have agreements with local realtors to quickly find a building to use in the case of an emergency.

"A disaster plan includes how to be in business after a disaster," said Koehler.

If there is a tornado, the city has four outdoor warning sirens and they plan to install six more in the coming months. But, those only work if someone is outside, so Hasheider still suggests getting a weather radio to make sure you know when a storm is headed your way.
