Springfield police: Forest Park murders not connected

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police told CBS 3 that the Tuesday and Wednesday night shootings in the Forest Park neighborhood are not connected, saying that each homicide appear to be isolated incidents.

Around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, the Springfield Police Department responded to a shots fired call in the area of Hollywood Street and Belmont Avenue. Police said when they arrived, 22-year-old Angel Llorens was shot several times.

Llorens was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

"The person who was shot was the intended target," said Sgt. John Delaney. "It is unfortunate that people resolve their issues by pulling out a handgun and shooting. That is just not the way things are done. When that happens, we respond."

Delaney said Wednesday night's shooting stemmed from an argument Llorens had in front of his Hollywood Street home earlier in the night, however, police have yet to publicly identify any suspects.

"We are looking at a few different people, but we are not identifying any suspects at this time," Delaney stated. "The investigation has been ongoing for 24 hours, and the guys in our homicide unit do a really good job of getting to the bottom of things."

Delaney said there is a key difference between Wednesday night's shooting and the one on Tuesday night that claimed the life of 30-year-old Fabian Pacheco.

Pacheco was shot multiple times on Orange Street, however, police believe that Forest Park shooting was drug related.

"We knew right away when the investigators arrived on the scene, knew that the players were different," said Delaney. "It was not one of those things that maybe it was a retaliation from the night before. We never thought that at all."

Whatever the reasoning, Delaney is confident in his department and wants Forest Park residents to feel safe.

"Commissioner [William] Fitchet has put extra officers on walking patrol, bike patrol and cruiser patrol in the area of Forest Park, just to make sure the citizens see us," said Delaney.
