CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

This week's Heartland Cook shares an award-winning family recipe that's sure to win sweet smiles at your table. Marilyn Schnare of Cape Girardeau says 40 years ago her sister took the recipe to the St. Louis Home Show and won a second place in a cake competition. Marilyn bakes her Wet Chocolate Cake for friends and family who she says all rave about its sweet, rich flavor.

Ingredients (cake): 

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour    
  • 2 sticks of butter or margarine
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa     
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl. In a saucepan melt two sticks of butter or margarine with cocoa and water. Bring to a boil, pour over sugar and flour and mix well.

In a separate small bowl dissolve baking soda in 1/2 cup buttermilk. Add beaten eggs and teaspoon vanilla. Mix contents of smaller bowl into larger bowl. Pour into an 11 x 13 cake pan. Bake 30 to 40 minutes. Prepare the frosting while the cake is in the oven.

Ingredients (frosting): 

  • 1 stick margarine or butter
  • 4 Tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup of pecans

Directions:

Mix the butter or margarine, cocoa and milk in a saucepan and bring it to a boil. Remove it from heat, and then add powdered sugar, vanilla, and pecans. Spread frosting on top of cake while it is still hot.
