CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

This week’s Heartland Cook comes from Fredericktown, Missouri, but her recipe is Russian inspired. Lawana Fay Rowland says her Russian Cheese Spread – also known as “Hot Tomatoes” are a perfect solution to spice up any garden veggie. Fay also says melting this spread on French or Italian loaf makes mouthwatering, extra zingy garlic bread!

Ingredients:

  • ¾ cup finely shredded cheese
  • 2 Tablespoons (heaping) dill dip
  • 1 -2 cloves of garlic (crushed)

Directions:

In a bowl, combine shredded cheese and dill dip. Crush garlic using garlic press and add to bowl. Mix well. Spread on sliced tomatoes, cucumbers or other garden vegetables.

Directions for zingy garlic bread:

Preheat oven to 350°.  Prepare spread as previously directed. Cut French or Italian loaf in half lengthwise. Top each half with “Hot Tomatoes” spread.  Bake 8 minutes spread-side up on a baking sheet. Broil on top oven shelf for 2 minutes (or less) until golden brown. Cut bread into 2-inch slices. Serve warm.
