CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Turnout for Tuesday's special election is expected to be similar to April's municipal election: low.

Polling places in Cape Girardeau didn't have lines, even in the typical morning rush.

In April, turnout in Cape Girardeau County was less than 15 percent, and the turnout for the special election could be similar.

This is the first time in more than 30 years that the last name Emerson is not on the ballot.

Jo Ann Emerson resigned shortly after she was re-elected in November to become the CEO of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Stay with Heartland News for election results after the polls close at 7 p.m.

Cape Girardeau County also has a new tool to help visually impaired voters.

County clerks across the country are always looking for new ways to increase turnout and help make the voting process as smooth as possible.

Back in April, a voter in Cape County who is visually impaired said the magnifier didn't do a very good job, so the county worked with the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired to get specialized magnifiers for this election.

County Clerk Kara Clark-Summers says these magnifiers will be a big improvement for visually impaired voters.

They can work on the paper ballot as well as electronic screens.

Clark-Summers also says that the new magnifiers will also help the visually impaired cast their ballots more quickly.
