WAPPAPELLO, MO (KFVS) -

Girl Scout Council members of the Missouri Heartland region are expected to meet Friday in Springfield to make a decision on a number of camps in Missouri.

Camp Latonka in the Lake Wappapello area is on that recommendation list.

Stacey Anderson said she loved going to Camp Latonka growing up. She learned survival tips like how to build a campfire and basic first aid.

Anderson said she will be sad for young girls who will not get to go to the camp if it does close.

"It's sort of an icon around here, I haven't met many girl scouts who haven't been to Camp Latonka or at least don't know about it, even girls today, it's important, it's important for our community, it's another way to keep kids out of trouble,” said Anderson.

Anderson wrote a letter to the council before they make their decision on Friday.

"I kind of told them about the memories I have from there, what kids would be missing out on if it was to close, would there be a possibility to have an alumni benefit you know maybe where they bring us all in we get to go through it like we used to do, and then make a big fat donation at the end,” said Anderson.

A Girl Scout spokeswoman said the council members will meet Friday, and expect to have an announcement on Saturday. But she said there is the possibility the decision time could take longer.
